Spears-Wembanyama Incident

Las Vegas police announced on Friday that no charges would be filed following a brief investigation into the reported altercation involving pop star Britney Spears, San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama, and a member of the player’s security team.

According to Spears, she was struck by a security guard as she attempted to approach Wembanyama near a restaurant in a Las Vegas casino complex on Wednesday night. On the other hand, Wembanyama claimed that someone, later identified as Spears, grabbed him from behind.

However, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stated on Friday that Spears unintentionally “hit herself in the face” when someone pushed her hand away from Wembanyama.

After concluding their investigation, the police determined that the security guard did not intentionally or unlawfully use force or violence against Spears. Consequently, no arrests were made, and no citations were issued.

Surveillance footage of the incident revealed that Spears was attempting to tap Wembanyama on the shoulder. When her hand made contact, the security guard, whose name was redacted in the report, instinctively pushed her hand away without looking, causing Spears’ hand to inadvertently hit her own face.

Spears had filed a police report alleging battery.

Wembanyama is scheduled to make his NBA Summer League debut for the Spurs in Las Vegas on Friday night. The 7-foot-3 French teen was the top pick in last month’s NBA draft and has generated considerable attention comparable to that of LeBron James in 2003.

The altercation occurred on Wednesday night. According to Spears, she had recognized Wembanyama at another hotel earlier in the evening and had decided to approach him and congratulate him on his success when she encountered him again at the Aria Resort & Casino.

In response to the incident, Spears expressed her embarrassment on Twitter and Instagram, denying any intention of grabbing Wembanyama and stating that she had only tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. She also expressed hope for an apology from either the team or the involved security guard.

Both the Spurs’ security guard and Spears’ security team were interviewed by the police. They confirmed that pushing someone’s hand off their shoulder is a standard response. The Spurs’ security guard stated that he had spoken with Spears afterward, identified himself, and apologized. Spears’ security team also confirmed that she had apologized, according to the police report.

Spears’ attorney in Los Angeles, Mathew Rosengart, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Wembanyama provided a different account of the events. He stated that security had advised him not to stop for anyone as he entered the restaurant, as pausing could attract attention and result in a crowd gathering. According to him, one person was shouting “sir, sir” to get his attention, and that person grabbed him from behind.

Hours later, he was informed that the person was Spears. He claimed that he never saw her because he did not turn around.
