Greater Manchester Police’s Assistant Chief Constable, Matt Boyle, confirmed that Alex arrived in the UK on a flight from Toulouse. Boyle mentioned that the police are still investigating the circumstances of Alex’s disappearance and considering if a criminal inquiry is warranted.

Now 17 years old, Alex explained to French authorities that he had been living with his mother and grandfather across Spain, Morocco, and France as part of a “spiritual community.” The family led a transient life, focusing on self-sufficiency, meditation, and discussing philosophical and spiritual themes. Alex decided to leave when his mother proposed relocating to Finland, as reported by French prosecutor Antoine Leroy.

Alex was discovered by a delivery driver, Fabien Accidini, who saw him walking alone at night in the rain, carrying a flashlight, backpack, and skateboard. After offering him a ride, Accidini learned about Alex’s four-day trek through the Pyrenees, traveling at night. Alex disclosed to Accidini that he had been taken by his mother years earlier and had spent the last two years in France as part of an unusual spiritual group.

Alex expressed a need for a future, feeling constrained by his current circumstances. His mother, Melanie Batty, is sought by British police concerning his disappearance. Authorities believe she might be in Finland. David Batty, Alex’s grandfather, is thought to have passed away around six months ago.
