Bo Naylor, Josh Naylor become first brothers to hit multi-run homers in same inning for same team

In an unprecedented event in Major League Baseball, brothers Bo and Josh Naylor of the Cleveland Guardians have become the first siblings in the sport’s history to both hit multi-run home runs in the same inning while playing for the same team. This exceptional performance took place during the third inning of the Guardians’ game against Texas, which they eventually lost 12-4 on Friday night.

Bo Naylor launched a 1-0 changeup from Rangers’ starting pitcher Jon Gray, hitting it an impressive 435 feet to the right field at Globe Life Field, without any outs in the third. Following this, Josh Naylor stepped up four batters later and swung at a 3-1 slider from Gray, sending it down the right-field line and narrowly keeping it fair to increase their lead to 4-0.

The last siblings to achieve home runs in the same inning were B.J. and Justin Upton, representing the Atlanta Braves, against Colorado’s Jon Garland on April 23, 2013. The Uptons also hold the distinction of being the last brothers to hit homers in the same game for the same team, a feat accomplished on September 27, 2014, in Philadelphia against the Phillies’ A.J. Burnett. The most recent instance of brothers hitting home runs for different teams was on August 17, 2020, featuring Kyle Seager of the Seattle Mariners and then-Los Angeles Dodger, Corey Seager, who is now with the Rangers.

Bo Naylor’s home run in this game was his second of the season. The rookie catcher had been recently promoted from the minor leagues on June 16. Meanwhile, Josh recorded his 12th home run of the year.

Following the Naylors’ performance, however, the Guardians struggled and were outscored 12-0. Guardians manager Terry Francona commented, “Aside from the impressive hits by the Naylor brothers, it was a relatively silent night for us.”
