Best Buy Pressure Cooker Recall

Best Buy is initiating a recall of nearly one million pressure cookers along with separate interior pots, due to a design flaw that has the potential to cause hot substances to erupt, thereby creating a risk of burns.

The faulty pressure cookers are marketed under the Insignia brand and feature incorrect volume indicators on their interior pots. This could lead consumers to exceed the intended capacity, subsequently causing hot food and liquids to forcefully exit the appliance when the valve is released or the lid is opened, as noted in a recent announcement by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

As of the current date, Best Buy has been notified of 31 occurrences where the contents of the cookers were expelled under pressure, including 17 instances resulting in burn injuries, some of which were classified as second-degree and serious burns.

The 930,000 recalled Insignia Multi-Function Pressure Cookers, along with their corresponding interior pots sold separately for replacement purposes, were available for purchase at Best Buy retail locations across the country as well as online through Best Buy’s official website and Amazon, from October 2017 until June of the current year.

To identify the affected products, consumers should look for their model numbers. The units, available in both six- and eight-quart capacities, carry the Insignia name prominently displayed on the front and on their permanent labels.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises owners of the recalled appliances to cease using them immediately. Best Buy is offering a complimentary replacement of the interior pot and the floating locking valve upon contact.

According to a statement on Best Buy’s website, the Richfield, Minnesota-based company will not issue refunds or in-store replacements for the returned pressure cookers. To qualify for a replacement kit, affected consumers must complete an online registration. It should be noted that only owners of the complete recalled pressure cooker unit, and not just the interior pot, are eligible for the replacement.

Best Buy emphasized that customer safety is of paramount importance, announcing that they are also proactively reaching out to those who have purchased the now-recalled items.

I’m always wary of smart kitchen gadgets for this reason. Analog may not be fancy but it’s tried and true.
