Author Sarah Bernstein has been awarded the prestigious Scotiabank Giller Prize for her novel “Study for Obedience.” The Montreal-born author, currently residing in Scotland, graciously accepted the $100,000 prize, despite the recent birth of her child just ten days ago.

Bernstein’s novel delves into the narrative of a young woman who relocates to the remote northern regions, only to find herself entangled in a series of bewildering and inexplicable events.

The Scotiabank Giller Prize, valued at 100,000 Canadian dollars (equivalent to $72,000 U.S.), stands as a testament to the finest achievements in Canadian fiction. Esteemed literary figures such as Margaret Atwood, Mordecai Richler, and Alice Munro have previously been honored with this accolade.

However, the announcement of Bernstein’s well-deserved win was not without disruption. During the gala, as her name was called, a protester seized the live telecast, raising anti-Israel war slogans, necessitating a repetition of the announcement.
