Antoine Griezmann’s decisive penalty in the 89th minute propelled Atletico Madrid to a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad, marking their fifth consecutive triumph across all competitions. The victory occurred on Sunday in Spain’s La Liga.

Griezmann successfully converted a penalty kick after a handball offense, elevating Atletico Madrid to the fourth position in the league standings. Meanwhile, Real Sociedad remained in sixth place, experiencing its first loss after a string of four successive wins.

Under the guidance of Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid had previously secured three straight La Liga victories and a 3-2 win against Feyenoord in the Champions League group stage earlier in the week. The team has maintained an unbeaten record at their home ground since January, accumulating 15 wins and a single draw in all competitions.

The domestic home winning streak for Atletico now stands at 13 games, just one shy of their record-setting run during the 2012-2013 season.

Samuel Lino gave Atletico an early advantage by netting his inaugural goal for the team in the 22nd minute. Mikel Oyarzabal managed to level the score for Sociedad in the 73rd minute with a breakaway goal. Griezmann, who once played for Sociedad, confidently dispatched the late penalty to ensure Atletico’s win. The French forward has now amassed four goals in his most recent five appearances for Atletico.

Atletico Madrid remains undefeated in its last eight La Liga confrontations against Sociedad, boasting five victories and three stalemates since the year 2019.

Real Sociedad had been on a winning spree of four matches and had not conceded a goal in its past three games across all competitions. This includes a 2-0 triumph against Salzburg in the Champions League group stage, marking Sociedad’s return to the competition after nearly a decade. The team from the Basque Country had previously defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in its last La Liga fixture.

In their encounter against Atletico, Sociedad failed to register a shot on target during the first half. They did, however, have a goal annulled for offside within the opening minute at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Both teams had near misses, with Atletico’s Rodrigo de Paul and Axel Witsel hitting the woodwork in the first and second halves, respectively, while Oyarzabal’s shot for Sociedad struck the post in the second half.

Saúl Coco and Marc Cardona each found the back of the net as Las Palmas clinched a 2-1 win against Villarreal, marking their second consecutive league victory. The win enabled the newly promoted side to ascend to the 11th position in the league table. On the other hand, Villarreal continued its lackluster performance, dropping to the 16th spot. The team is now without a win in its last four league games, accumulating two losses and two draws.
