Asteroid Could Wipe Out a City: Don’t Fear the Sky, Learn How to Spot and Avoid It

This weekend, a really big asteroid will fly really close to Earth and the moon. It’s so close that astronomers will be able to take a look at it with binoculars or small telescopes – all from an incredible distance of 100,000 miles away!

NASA said it’s rare for an asteroid as big as 2023 DZ2 to come so close (about once every 10 years). Scientists think that this asteroid is between 130 feet and 300 feet wide. It was discovered a month ago, and on Saturday it will fly past the moon at 320,000 miles away and a few hours after that by the Indian Ocean really fast, about 17,500 mph!

The European Space Agency’s planetary defense chief, Richard Moissl, said that an asteroid – called a “city killer”- is not going to crash into Earth. However, this close approach of the asteroid offers astronauts a great chance to observe it. According to NASA, if and when we are faced with a dangerous asteroid in the future, this event will provide good experience in how to defend our planet. The Virtual Telescope Project will broadcast a live webcast of the close encounter.

The asteroid won’t be back near our planet again until 2026. Before, there was a small chance it would hit Earth in that year, but scientists now know it won’t happen.
