In California, a man has been detained by law enforcement in relation to the demise of a Jewish individual who was protesting during the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office announced that a 50-year-old male was apprehended on Thursday. He is being held on suspicions of involuntary manslaughter, which implies the unintentional causing of another’s death. The decision to press formal charges rests with the district attorney, based on the evidence available.

The victim, Paul Kessler, aged 69, succumbed to injuries on November 6th in a hospital. This was subsequent to a clash with a pro-Palestinian demonstrator on November 5th in Thousand Oaks, located to the northwest of Los Angeles.

Sheriff Jim Fryhoff disclosed that investigations led to the conclusion that Kessler had accidentally fallen backward, resulting in a fatal head injury.

The involved pro-Palestinian protester remained at the scene, informing deputies that he had contacted emergency services.

The authorities have not specified the reasons behind the arrest. They are currently gathering additional video footage to further the investigation. Previously, a man from Moorpark, aged 50, was temporarily detained and had his home searched soon after Kessler’s death, but was later released.

A temporary memorial with flowers and candles has been set up at the site of the incident in Thousand Oaks. Kessler, who was part of a pro-Israel group, joined the gathering which was initially organized as a peaceful support for Palestinians. The event attracted about 75 attendees, and there were no signs of violence observed by patrolling officers until 15 minutes prior to the altercation.

The incident occurs amidst growing demonstrations and heightened tensions in the U.S., as casualties continue to rise in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
