Arizona Supreme Court Rejects Lake’s Appeal to Recount Governor’s Race Results

The highest court in Arizona, called the Supreme Court, said “no” to most of Republican Kari Lake’s appeal about losing the governor’s race. However, they agreed that a lower court made a mistake about something to do with checking early ballot signatures in Maricopa County. So the Supreme Court sent that part of Kari Lake’s appeal back down to the lower court so they can reconsider it.

Christine Lake, who was defeated for a political office by Katie Hobbs in November of 2020, didn’t accept her race loss. Instead, she kept believing President Donald Trump’s false claims about the election even though these lies were not true and other candidates in similar situations had accepted their races’ results. She chose to make the lies from Trump central to her campaign.

A former TV anchor recently focused on an issue that happened in Maricopa County, the place where most of Arizona’s voters live. The problem was related to ballot printers at some polling places, which printed ballots that were too light and thus couldn’t be read by computers meant to tabulate votes. This led to long lines at those areas. The former TV anchor thought that this issue might be due to intentional misconduct.

County officials said that everyone had an opportunity to vote and all of the ballots were correctly tallied up. The ones that machines couldn’t read were taken to better counting machines at election headquarters.

In mid-February, Arizona Court of Appeal disagreed with what Lake claimed and found out that she had no proof that people whose ballots weren’t readable by tabulators at voting places didn’t get a chance to vote.

The court said that even though the ballots couldn’t be read at first, it could have been counted eventually. A person also said that enough voters had their rights taken away from them to change who won the election. But the court said this opinion was wrong and not true.

Lake’s lawyers said that something went wrong when the ballots were being counted. They claimed there was a mix-up where workers put their own mail-in ballots into the pile of ballots to be counted, and important paperwork recording ballot transfers wasn’t there. But the county disagrees with this.

The lawyers of Hobbs said Lake was attempting to ruin Arizona’s election outcomes, but did not provide any proof. Lake’s challenge would be very hard because she had to demonstrate misconduct done on purpose in order for the wrong person to be declared as the victor. Finally, Hobbs took over as governor on January 2nd.
