Nobel Economics Prize

The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, the last in the series of this year’s Nobel Prizes, is slated for disclosure this coming Monday in Stockholm.

The upcoming laureate or laureates in economics will be revealed by The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, succeeding the previous week’s announcements in the fields of medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace.

Established in 1968 by the central bank of Sweden, the economics prize is officially designated as the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

The recipients of the previous year’s award were Ben Bernanke, former Chair of the Federal Reserve, along with Douglas W. Diamond and Philip Dybvig, recognized for their seminal work on bank failures that significantly influenced the United States’ robust intervention during the financial crisis of 2007-2008.

It is notable that only two of the 92 individuals awarded the economics prize since its inception have been women.

In the preceding week, the medicine prize was conferred upon Hungarian-American Katalin Karikó and American Drew Weissman. The physics accolade was bestowed on Tuesday to Anne L’Huillier of France and Sweden, French researcher Pierre Agostini, and Ferenc Krausz, who was born in Hungary.

Chemistry laureates were U.S. researchers Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus, and Alexei Ekimov, who were declared winners on Wednesday. They were followed by Jon Fosse, a Norwegian author who claimed the literature prize. Narges Mohammadi, an incarcerated Iranian activist, was the recipient of the peace prize on Friday.

The formal prize ceremonies are scheduled for December, to be held in Oslo and Stockholm. Each prize comes with a cash sum of 11 million Swedish kronor, approximately one million U.S. dollars, along with an 18-carat gold medal and a diploma.

Hope the peace prize makes as much noise as the economics one. Sometimes it feels like we care more about money than making the world a better place.

Ah the Bank of Sweden Prize, still trying to live up to Alfred Nobel’s legacy. Fun fact, Nobel didn’t actually create an economics prize.

Interesting to see how economics is still considered a hard science by the Nobel committee. With all the disruptions from crypto, they might need to reconsider their frameworks, just sayin.

With climate change looming, would be nice to see some environmental economics get the spotlight for once.

Who won last year again? Oh right Bernanke, Diamond, and Dybvig. Their work on bank failures was game changing for sure.
