Among the Maine Shooting Victims: A Youthful Bowler, a Devoted Shipbuilder, and a Sign Language Interpreter

In the dual mass shootings that unfolded in Lewiston, Maine, the list of 18 fatalities included a 14-year-old enthusiastic bowler, a shipbuilder passionate about the game of cornhole, and a sign language interpreter.

Maine State Police reports reveal that the tragic incidents began Wednesday night at Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley where seven people lost their lives. Of the deceased, six were male and one was female. Another eight males met the same fate at Schemengees Bar and Grille, and three additional victims succumbed to their injuries in hospital settings.

Bill and Aaron Young

Bill Young, a 44-year-old resident of Winthrop, and his 14-year-old son Aaron were both present at Just-In-Time Recreation to participate in a youth bowling league, and both lost their lives in the tragedy. According to Kim McConville, Bill Young’s cousin, Bill was not only a master auto mechanic but also a man committed to his family. Aaron Young was a promising young bowler, acknowledged for his talents by the youth league.

Jim Hodgkin, the superintendent of Winthrop Public Schools, issued a statement confirming that among the victims were a high school freshman and his father. Hodgkin stated, “The magnitude of this tragedy is unparalleled for our community and educational institutions.”

Peyton Brewer-Ross

Peyton Brewer-Ross was an employee at Bath Iron Works and a committed pipefitter. He was remembered by his union members as a man who left behind a partner, a young daughter, and a network of friends. His life was cut short while enjoying the company of friends. Wellman Brewer, his brother, described him as a person who was universally liked and as the focal point of any social gathering.

Joshua Seal

Joshua Seal, who worked as a sign language interpreter, lost his life while participating in a cornhole tournament at Schemengees Bar, among other members of the deaf community. His wife, Elizabeth Seal, remembered him on social media as her soulmate, a loving family member, and a distinguished professional in his field.

Robert and Luceille Violette

Retired couple Bob and Luceille Violette were also among those who perished. Bob had been actively involved in coaching a youth bowling league. Patrick Poulin, whose son had been coached by Bob, praised him as someone who was consistently supportive and encouraging to the youngsters.

Michael Deslauriers

Michael Deslauriers was identified as one of the victims at Just-In-Time Recreation by his father, who shares the same name. Deslauriers and a friend were killed as they attempted to confront the shooter.

Joe Walker

Joe Walker, the bar manager at Schemengees, was shot twice in the abdomen while trying to disarm the shooter with a butcher knife. His father, Auburn City Councilor Leroy Walker, described his son’s actions as heroic.

Tricia Asselin

Tricia Asselin was employed part-time at Just-In-Time Recreation. She was off duty that night but decided to go bowling with her sister. Asselin was killed while attempting to call 911 during the incident.

Arthur Strout

Arthur Strout was at the bar playing pool with his father when he became another victim. Arthur Barnard, his father, left the bar minutes before the shooting occurred. Arthur Strout leaves behind a blended family of five children.
