Amazon Confirms Normal Operation of AWS Post-Outage Affecting Publishers’ Websites

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon, reported an outage on Tuesday, disrupting the operations of various publishers who found their websites down.

The company disclosed on its website that the issue arose due to AWS Lambda, a service that enables customers to run code for diverse applications.

About two hours following the onset of customer-reported errors, Amazon updated its AWS status page, indicating that many of the impacted services had “fully recovered,” and the restoration of remaining services was underway. By shortly after 6:30 pm E.T., the company announced all AWS services were back to normal.

Amazon reported encountering several error rates for AWS services in the Northern Virginia region, where it has numerous data centers. Users may have faced sign-in or authentication errors when using certain AWS services and could have encountered difficulties while trying to connect with AWS Support. The Lambda issue also indirectly influenced other AWS services.

The first acknowledgment of Tuesday’s outage came shortly after 3 p.m. ET. The extent of the problem was unclear, but several companies, including news outlets such as The Verge and Penn Live, reported difficulties. Delta Air Lines spokesperson Morgan Durrant reported that the company experienced “some slowing of inbound calls for some minutes” on Tuesday afternoon. However, he confirmed that the outage did not affect bookings, flights, or any other airport operations.

This incident mirrors a longer AWS outage in December 2021, which impacted numerous U.S. companies for over five hours.

The outage coincided with Amazon’s two-day security conference in Anaheim, California, designed to promote its cloud services to existing and potential clients. Despite the company’s vast global server network, there has been a reduction in spending on the unit, leading to slower growth in the most recent quarter.
