Former South Carolina attorney and convicted killer Alex Murdaugh has consented to enter a guilty plea in connection to federal charges alleging he embezzled multiple millions from his clients, as revealed by legal documents.

Should Murdaugh remain resolute in his decision when he appears before a judge on September 21, this occasion will signify his inaugural admission of guilt for any crime in a legal setting.

Murdaugh, aged 55, is currently serving a life imprisonment sentence for the homicides of his wife and son, committed two years prior at their residence. Despite his conviction, he has consistently proclaimed his innocence from the witness stand during his trial and is actively pursuing an appeal for his double-murder conviction.

Federal prosecutors argue that his motive for committing the murders stemmed from his impending exposure for stealing millions of dollars, believing that the deaths would elicit sympathy and grant him additional time to contrive a plausible cover story.

The federal guilty plea is anticipated to extend Murdaugh’s prison term, regardless of the outcome of his ongoing appeal against his murder convictions.

Before the lethal incidents, both state and federal authorities have documented that Murdaugh siphoned off millions of dollars from clients who were severely injured and required the funds for medical treatment. He stands accused of defrauding his family’s law practice, operating a money-laundering scheme through a drug ring, and even enlisting a friend to kill him on a remote highway to facilitate a $10 million life insurance payout for his son, an attempt that merely resulted in a superficial wound to Murdaugh’s head.

In the federal judicial system, Murdaugh is indicted on 14 counts of money laundering, five counts of wire fraud, a single count of bank fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire and bank fraud, and an additional count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Former friend and legal counsel Cory Fleming, who assisted Murdaugh in this theft, received a prison sentence of nearly four years earlier this month, following his own guilty plea. Other allegations indicate that Murdaugh and his banker associate, Russell Laffitte, collaborated to unlawfully withdraw settlement money from client accounts. Laffitte has been convicted on six counts of wire and bank fraud and is serving a seven-year prison term while appealing his sentence.

Murdaugh also faces accusations of establishing a fraudulent bank account under a name resembling a legitimate settlement-handling company to further defraud clients.

Currently held in protective custody in an undisclosed state prison, Murdaugh was convicted in March for the murders of his son Paul, 22, and his wife Maggie, 52. He is also awaiting trial on approximately 100 additional state charges, including but not limited to insurance fraud, tax evasion, and additional thefts.

A preliminary hearing on these charges is scheduled to occur one week prior to his federal court appearance for the guilty plea. This will mark Murdaugh’s first public appearance since his detainment at the Colleton County Courtroom on March 3.

Since his imprisonment, Murdaugh has been seen publicly only once, through a series of photographs captured by the camera in his prison-issued tablet, which were initially disclosed under the state’s open records law but later deemed inappropriate for public release.
