Actor Mark Margolis, murderous drug kingpin on ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul,’ dies at 83

Mark Margolis, a veteran actor celebrated for his chilling portrayal of the ruthless drug lord Hector Salamanca in “Breaking Bad” and its prequel, “Better Call Saul,” has passed away at the age of 83.

Margolis breathed his last at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City after a brief illness, revealed his son, Morgan Margolis, in an official statement.

In 2012, Margolis’ gripping performance as Salamanca, the stroke-stricken and speech-impaired head of his drug empire, earned him an Emmy nomination for outstanding guest actor in “Breaking Bad.” His character’s intriguing history was further explored in “Better Call Saul,” where he had a recurring role from 2016 through 2022.

Margolis’ diverse filmography included prominent roles in Darren Aronofsky’s films such as “Noah,” “Black Swan,” “The Wrestler,” and “Pi.” He is also remembered for his portrayal of Alberto “The Shadow” in “Scarface,” along with appearances in “The Thomas Crown Affair,” “Gone Baby Gone,” and “Stand Up Guys.”

Born in 1939 in Philadelphia, Margolis honed his acting skills under the tutelage of renowned acting coach Stella Adler in New York City. He initially focused on theatre, starring in a wide array of off-Broadway shows, including performances at the Public Theater in New York, and on Broadway in “Infidel Caesar,” a reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar.” He also founded the touring theatre group, Blue Dome.

Mark Margolis is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Margolis, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage, and his son Morgan, currently serving as the CEO of Knitting Factory Entertainment. The family intends to conduct a private memorial and funeral service.
