A bison gored an Arizona woman in Yellowstone, the park’s first such attack in 2023

An Arizona woman visiting Yellowstone National Park was severely injured when she was gored by a bison, marking the park’s first recorded attack of this kind in 2023.

According to park officials, the incident took place on Monday morning near Lake Lodge on the north side of Lake Yellowstone. The 47-year-old woman from Phoenix, accompanied by another individual, encountered two bison while walking in a field. Sensing danger, they attempted to distance themselves from the animals.

Unfortunately, one of the bison pursued them and ultimately gored the woman, inflicting significant wounds to her chest and abdomen. Immediate medical attention was necessary, and she was airlifted to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

To protect the victim’s privacy, park officials refrained from disclosing her name or current condition. Additionally, it remains unclear how far the individuals were from the bison at the onset of the attack, as stated in the official statement.

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident. Yellowstone National Park mandates that individuals maintain a minimum distance of 25 yards (23 meters) from all large animals, including bison, elk, deer, and moose. Moreover, visitors are required to keep a minimum distance of 100 yards (91 meters) from bears and wolves.

This particular attack is the first documented bison-related injury to a person in Yellowstone in over a year. In 2022, two people were injured by bison within the park’s boundaries.
